My Junior High School was next door to the High School, so we could watch the older kids and long for the day we would move to the building next door. Several of the "cool" high school guys had Mercurys, lowered in the back with glass-pack mufflers that made an amazing amount of noise. Sporting duck-tail haircuts and jeans really low on their hips, these "older men" were a bit scary, but we watched them relentlessly, with fascination.

The rounded chrome grills of the Mercurys and the Buicks in the late 40's and early 50's are my favorites. Charles and I often visit classic car shows, and I run around taking lots of photographs. This painting is one of a series I did of grills and hubcaps. It's now part of the Dreyer's Grand Ice Cream art collection.
